What a Licensed Master Plumber Means in NYC

New York City’s Department of Buildings issues the Licensed Master Plumber designation — one of the most rigorous contractor certifications in the city. Earning it requires years of experience as a journeyman plumber in New York City, passing a comprehensive written examination, and meeting ongoing insurance and compliance requirements. An LMP is the only type of contractor authorized to inspect, install, and repair gas piping systems in NYC — which is why the designation matters when a property owner or building super is choosing who to trust with gas lines, boilers, and compliance inspections.

• Local Law 152 Gas Piping Inspections — Required for most NYC residential and commercial properties with more than two residential units, conducted and signed off by a licensed master plumber every four years on the DOB’s schedule.
• Gas Pipe Installation and Replacement — New gas pipe installation and replacement for residential and commercial properties, executed to DOB standards and coordinated with utility companies as required.
• Gas Leak Detection and Repair — Identification and repair of gas leaks, including violation removal and coordination with National Grid and Con Edison to restore service.
• Boiler Inspections — Compliance inspections and ongoing maintenance for boiler systems at residential and commercial properties.
• Backflow Device Installation and Inspection — Installation and testing of backflow prevention devices as required by NYC DEP.
