There are several different materials available for gas piping systems, and each of these different materials has its own advantages and drawbacks when it comes to longevity and the safety of the overall system.
For this reason, the NYC Department of Buildings has imposed building codes for which materials plumbers can use when installing, repairing, or replacing gas piping systems. Meeting these requirements is essential for complying with building codes to avoid any violations and for keeping your property safe.
Available Gas Piping Materials
Piping that has historically been used or currently used in other places but is not allowed in NYC includes cast iron pipe, aluminum alloy pipe, brass pipe, and copper pipe. These pipes carry different risks, such as the ability of iron pipes to corrode. This leaves your property open to gas leaks.
The allowed materials for NYC gas piping systems are:
- Carbon Steel – This durable pipe material is resistant to corrosion, rust, and physical damage and often selected for its ability to safely carry natural gas for a number of years.
- Wrought Iron – Although there is some corrosive potential with iron piping, wrought iron can be welded together for a seal that will not leak.
- Polyethylene (PE) – This plastic piping material is allowed for outdoor use and cannot extend more than 3 inches into the building. High density polyethylene (HDPE), which is most commonly used, can withstand high pressure and is resistant to most environmental and physical damage.
In addition to the types of materials which local properties in NYC can use for their gas piping systems, the DOB also mandates that all materials must be new at the time of installation. Reusing either pipes or fittings is not allowed.
If your property is covered under Local Law 152 and receives gas piping system inspections, the materials of your pipes is one of the factors the licensed master plumber will look at during the inspection.
