What a Master Plumber Does During a Gas Inspection in NYC

There are many reasons you might need a gas piping system inspection in NYC. Many properties have mandated inspections under Local Law 152, but you may also schedule a gas piping system inspection on your own if you suspect a leak, are undergoing repairs or renovations, or have another reason which makes it necessary to have a professional look at your gas piping system.

The inspection process will differ somewhat depending on the reason for the inspection. For instance, a Local Law 152 inspection has an array of specific requirements to be completed during the inspection. But in general, any gas line inspection in NYC will use a variety of different inspection techniques to verify that your system is in proper working order. Here is what you can expect during a gas piping system inspection.

Residential and Commercial Property Gas Piping Inspection Process

An inspection of your gas piping system is the top way to find a leak or work that was performed incorrectly in the past and may now be putting your property and occupants at risk. In addition to leaks and improper installation, an LMP will look for aging pipes that may be in need of updating before they can pose a problem. To find these problems during an inspection, a licensed master plumber in NYC will perform some or all of the following tasks:

  • Odor Inspection – An odor of rotten eggs is often the first indication of a gas leak. A plumber will survey the areas where your gas piping system is known to exist and note any odors that could potentially indicate a leak in those areas.
  • Visual Inspection – A master plumber will look at pipelines for signs of damage. Although only exposed piping is included in an LL 152 inspection, an underground inspection may be necessary if you have reason to believe an extensive leak exists.
  • Pressure Tests – A pressure test is one way to identify a leak. The process involves filling the gas line with air and watching for an increase in pressure. If no increase occurs, there is likely a leak somewhere in the system where the air is escaping.
  • Gas System Mapping – When necessary, an inspection can involve mapping out the existing gas system to understand where piping currently runs and what areas may be impacted by damage.
  • Valve Testing and Inspection – An inspection can include valve testing to be sure that all valves are working as expected and are not leaking any fuel.

After an inspection, an LMP can issue a report and provide guidance on the steps that you should take next, including making repairs or replacements to the existing gas piping system.
